Southlanders:

We're so excited that Issue No. 03, (RE)BIRTH, is churning along, on track for its fall, well, birth.

Which means it's also time to start putting together Issue No. 04. We've settled on a theme: FELLOW TRAVELERS. It's about the hikers you meet along the trail, the burs that stick to your clothes. And it's about something crucial to our mission: how allies sometimes travel down parallel paths without knowing it. Hunters and flower-picking botanists. Ranchers and fire ecologists.

It's a fitting theme for another reason. Whether this next issue exists at all depends on Southlands's fellow travelers—you.

Here's the truth: I started this magazine solo, and I remain its primary funder. I can see a path toward financial sustainability, but it's a long one — years out, rather than months. Which means it runs beyond what I can cover alone.

We're launching a campaign to raise $30,000 over the next four weeks—enough to cover the editorial and printing costs of Issue No. 04. To put that in real terms: our story fees run $250 to $1,500 per piece. Each printed copy costs roughly $8. Every dollar goes directly to the writers, artists, and photographers who make Southlands what it is, and to getting it into your hands. (And, through our partnership with Deep South Today, Southlands's journalism and magazine production is a fully tax-deductible project.)

You can donate here. (Be sure to select "Southlands" in the "direct my gift" dropdown.)

There's more you can do, of course: if you've been enjoying our work and haven't yet become a member, now's the time. And if you have friends who'd love Southlands, please, spread the word.

Thank you for traveling this road with us.
